Reckonable service for Ireland redundancy
Ireland’s statutory redundancy formula multiplies reckonable years of service — not always a naive calendar span from start date to end date. Getting reckonable service wrong is the usual reason two calculators disagree.
Why the law uses “reckonable”
Employment histories include unpaid leave, lay-off, and other gaps. The statutory scheme defines what counts toward the years used in (2 × years) + 1.
Practical workflow
- Write your own timeline of start date, breaks, and end date.
- Ask HR/payroll for the reckonable service figure they will use.
- If the figures differ, request a written explanation citing the periods excluded.
- Only then run calculators with the agreed year count.
Calculator tip
Our Ireland redundancy calculator is only as good as the service years you enter. Pair it with Ireland statutory redundancy explained.
Disputes
If you cannot agree reckonable service, seek advice early — especially before signing a receipt or waiver that locks the figure in.

Practical next steps
Write down your inputs, run an estimate on this site, then immediately cross-check the official calculator for your jurisdiction. Save PDFs or screenshots of both results with the date visible. If you speak to HR or a solicitor, share the input list — not only the headline number — so they can reproduce the math.
Revisit this page after any April employment-limits update or budget that changes tax bands. We publish a rates-verified date on the calculator tools; guides can lag by days or weeks after a surprise fiscal announcement.
